Grilling Thriller Authors: Q&A with Becca Day
In this series, I carry out hard-hitting interviews with psychological thriller authors, where I ask them… just a bunch of silly questions, actually. This month, it’s Becca Day’s turn in the hot seat.
1. Which emoji do you use most often?
It’s the sleepy emoji… which I think just about sums up my general state at all times as a mum of two young kids!
2. If your writing muse were an animal, what would it be?
A cat. Comes and goes as she pleases. Can be really great to spend time with but other times is a bit of a diva.
3. What’s your go-to karaoke song? (Bonus points if it’s terrifying.)
I’ve only ever done karaoke once (after many shots of tequila) and I sang Santa Baby. My car, however, is a big fan of my singing and has had the pleasure of listening to me belt out Defying Gravity a fair few times.
4. How do you celebrate small wins in your writerly life, like finishing a draft?
Usually, by having some guilt-free time playing The Sims. I know that sounds very juvenile of me, but I love the game and if I sit down to play it knowing I have a draft waiting to be finished on the computer I swear I can feel the Sims judging me.
5. Is there a true crime case or real-life mystery you’re deeply fascinated by?
The disappearance of Madeleine McCann, mostly because I vividly remember her going missing when I was a teenager and watching the news every day to see if they had found her. Never in a million years did I think all this time later there still wouldn’t be an answer.
6. What are your non-book-related hobbies?
I do aerial hoop, which I love and is the best full body workout I’ve ever done. I also adore doing crochet and spending time in the great outdoors. My eldest daughter and I are big fans of hiking.
7. You discover a random door. Where are you hoping it leads?
The Hufflepuff Common Room. I’m still annoyed I never got my letter when I turned eleven.
8. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received (writing advice or life advice)?
Writing advice – Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing. Focus on your own journey.
Life advice – Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing. Focus on your own journey.
9. Tell us about your latest novel in one sentence.
Miranda loves to spy on her neighbours with her video doorbell, but she gets more than she bargained for when she sees her creepy neighbour getting rid of what looks like a dead body and her friend goes missing.
